How do you care for your leather item?

A leather item can last for years and only get better with time. But to ensure it lasts that long, it’s essential to understand its characteristics and take the right steps.

The Anatomy of Leather and Vegetable Tanning

Leather consists of several layers: the grain side (the top layer, which is the finest) and the flesh side.

It is through tanning (the process of transforming raw hides into durable leather) that this material becomes rot-resistant and suitable for use in leather goods.

Vegetable tanning, in particular, uses natural tannins derived from bark and plants, which give the leather its beauty and durability.

But over time, leather loses some of the oils and fats that nourish it. This is a natural process, but it will gradually dry out the material and dull its luster.

That is why it is essential to condition leather regularly to keep it supple and preserve its color.

Essential tools and products

Proper care depends on simple steps and the right tools:

  • Stiff-bristled scrub brush: for removing stubborn dirt,

  • A clean, slightly damp cloth: to dust the surface,

  • Polishing brush: to restore shine and luster to leather,

  • Nourishing Cleansing Cream: to gently cleanse and moisturize,

  • Shoe polish: to deeply nourish the leather and restore its color.

Do you know the difference between shoe polish andshoe cream?

  • The cream nourishes, provides a subtle tint, and deeply moisturizes.

  • The polish mainly adds shine and makes the leather more water-resistant.

Steps for Leather Care

Unlike shoes, which are exposed to rain, mud, and dust, a leather wallet, cardholder, or keychain doesn’t require very frequent care.

Occasional care is sufficient, unless the item has gotten wet, is stained, or the leather appears dry and the colors have faded.

My Nourishing Balm

With every item I sell, I include a nourishing balm. Handmade by me using natural ingredients, it will protect your item and restore its shine.

Here are the steps to follow for a successful interview:

Step 1: Surface cleaning

You will need a stiff-bristled brush (often made from boar bristles) and a slightly damp cloth. Gently brush the surface to remove dust and dirt, then wipe down all dirty areas with the cloth.

The goal is to condition the leather and prevent dirt from seeping in during the conditioning process.

Step 2: Cleaning and Nourishing

Apply a small amount of nourishing cream to a soft cloth and work it into the leather using circular motions.

This simple step helps moisturize the fabric, restore its softness, and prevent it from drying out.

Step 3: Polishing

I recommend waiting at least 15 minutes before moving on to this step to allow the cream time to penetrate the leather deeply.

Using a soft-bristled brush or a polishing glove, rub the leather vigorously until you feel the brush glide easily over the surface.

Your item is soft, shiny, and radiant once again.

With these few simple steps, your leather will stay supple and looking great for years to come.

Because leather is a living material, and if you give it the care it deserves… it will reward you for it.
